Kris Graves makes artwork that addresses societal concerns and seeks to educate people about cultural issues via art.
Graves captures the intricacies of social authority and its influence on the physical environment using a combination of conceptual and documentary methods.
He examines how capitalism and power have impacted countries, as well as how this may be seen and felt in daily life.
Graves also strives to improve the portrayal of people of colour in the fine art canon, as well as to foster dialogue about race, representation, and urban living.
He got his BFA in Visual Arts from Purchase College, State University of New York, and his work has been published and shown internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Getty Institute in Los Angeles, and the National Portrait Gallery in London, England.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Institute, the Schomburg Center, the Whitney Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Brooklyn Museum; and The Wedge Collection, Toronto, are among the permanent collections.
Graves also serves as Vice President of Photography on the boards of Blue Sky Gallery: Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts in Portland and The Architectural League of New York.
